Astor was a dog I personally knew. I did this portrait as a gift to Astors family. He was 14 years old at the time I did it. He died few years later in his 18th year of old age. He lived as a member of the family so his death was painful. I am very glad I have known this dog, and glad I have painted him. I always feel more connected to the animals I paint. I learn their faces, expressions, I memorize them in a way only an owner can.
I hope everything is nice over the rainbow now, that he’s young again and running through green meadows with his furry friends.
I am very sorry I lost the reference photo I took of him. It was taken with my mobile phone – therefore not very good. I was very happy how I made him look on the portrait, but I guess some things are better left in our memories…
